For the past few years, Yiddish Summer Weimar has focused on new and intercultural developments in Jewish music. At the same time, world music clubs from San Francisco to Istanbul have been swimming in klezmer-balkan-Roma sounds. With so much attention to new syntheses, have we perhaps lost some of the beauty, depth, and uniqueness of older musical traditions? In 2008, Yiddish Summer Weimar starts an intensive, 2-year exploration of the roots of Yiddish and Roma music and their relationships in both the past and the present.
