This new
workshop (In English and German) is intended for two
kinds of participants: i) folk musicians with little
training in music theory who want to learn the
essentials, ii) classically-trained musicians who may
have a lot of music theory training and want to learn
how to apply it to playing folk music. We will cover
basic music theory of melody, harmony, rhythm, and form,
always with the focus on its practical use in hearing
and making folk music.

An essential part of this work is learning to understand
and learn music by ear. Participants should play an
instrument at least an intermediate level, and should
have at least a basic knowledge of reading music. This
workshop can be taken as a preparation for the workshop
that immediately follows, Introduction to Yiddish Music.
